In recent years police brutality towards African Americans has increased. This violence has resulted in riots across the United States. The August 2014 death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri many Americans, some who are former Civil Rights activists, have spoken out against police brutality. Black Lives Matter states that the movement’s goal is to bring justice to the present unjust police killings of African Americans. Looking at prior cases of brutality and its connection to racial profiling, such as the police shooting of Ronald Stokes in 1962, has led many activists in America to connect these past issues to the current events. FBI director James Comey in 2015 stated, â€Å"Police officers on patrol in our nation’s cities often work in environments where a hugely disproportionate percentage of street crime is committed by young men of color.† Many like Comey, have suggested that police brutality and profiling cease to exist; however, this is far from the truth. As violence towards African Americans increases yearly, the relevance of the past displays the evidence of how the issue is relevant in the present. To understand police violence towards African Americans, the American public must look into past cases of brutality to inform society’s perspective in the present and into the future. The meaning of the word Image in Latin is imago Dei which means shadow and Likeliness. A person who believes to be a part of God and an image of God in him will feel a great pleasure and completeness. This provides them a sense of Greatness which is required by them. This is known as Image of God when peoples start to feel it within themselves. Sometimes it also has some negative impact on peoples like believing they are God as well they are someone who can control the movement of something. This sometimes becomes painful and disastrous for the peoples. (Neil, 1962) According to the fathers of the church the term image and likeliness which is described and understood do not mean the same thing. The image can be termed a power by which everyone is endowed with the God since our existence in the world. By making proper us of being based upon the Image of the god we can acquire the ability Gods likeness. These are something which is necessary a man should inherit. A person can have Image of God which means he/she may have the Qualities which a person inherits, someone can be creative because God is creative. In the Bible it's described that the god has created heavens and Earth. This can be related to the creativity of a human. An artist is creative as he can paint something creative, an actor is creative as he can do something creative role in the film. A manufacturer is creative because he can make a thing in which creativity is needed; architecture is creative because he is building something creative. The Image is truer and stronger concept in todays world than before, as we know we are something because of a special Quality and Image in ourselves. This has become the measure in which peoples are being measured in present time. We care more about the talents and gifts a person inherits not of his true character. (Milne, 2009) The image which explains that a person communicates because God Communicate, as stated in Genesis 1:3, God said let there be light. Human is superior to any other creature of the world because we can think a reason behind everything, we can use symbols and arts in our communication. This is a special quality which a person inherits; everyone should communicate with the society where they are living in. Its said that someone is intelligent because God is intelligent, logical thoughts flow through the Gods mind, as a result, we can think critically because of its will make an impact on a persons ability to think logically. As we all have some different level of intelligence though we can make it better and more proper by analyzing it as a God image. (Leaney, 1973) Irenaeus made a significant difference between the Gods images, which he has identified as the human reason and the moral freedom. We have lost the likeness with the image of God in fall; this was mainly interpreted in the medieval period and made an optimistic view in the Human nature. Luther in his works stated that there is some parallelism with the Hebrew which describes the image of the God and the likeness as the same concept. As per Luthers views, the Image of God is totally lost and that can be regenerated only by the Holy spirits. There are different views regarding how the image is lost due to fall. A concept which shows that the image of God provides us the qualities which separate us from the animals. They're different qualities of the image of Gods in which some I have already explained in the above parts. Though its stated that communication and rationality are also present in the animals, the qualities in some other cases qualities are not seen as a Gods image rather than its seen as a relationship with the God. But genesis also explained in later that the image of the God is the likeliness, not the image. Authors have claimed that the image of God does not relate with the spiritual perfection, as the creator was aware that the humans will do the sin. Martin Luther also claimed that the image of original righteousness which is completely lost in the fall. John Calvin similarly makes a distinguished relationship between the image of God and the destruction of it due to sin. Later on, he has made a less hardcore assumption and differentiated it as completely lost and partially lost. As stated by Feinberg the image of God in present time is in the corrupted and impaired state. He stated that the present theory regarding the image of the God is not actually the same but it is changed with the time. There are some debates over the likeliness, as per the Jim Schicatano views, the Image and likeness are two different things. The likeliness means for someone who possesses some of the qualities of a person. As it could be true a person cant possess all the characteristics of God. As per his views a person cannot possess the qualities of god such as Wisdom, perfection, and creativity like a God (Jim, ). There are also some different views of the authors who has different views regarding the image and the Likeliness. The Image and the God and the likeliness does not differ from each other. The church fathers always suggested a distinction between the two words. The Greek of the image is taste whereas the Latin of the Likeliness is the Demuth. As per the fathers view, the tselem is referred as the physical state and the mamuth stands for the ethical state of a person (Feinberg, 1972). It related that the image is the unchanging part of a person whereas the likeliness is the changeable part. Thus, the image could be something different or a person but the later could be lost with the generation to generation (Crawford, 1966). Schicatano believes that the humans are like God humans as they have given preference over other creatures. As the GOD is responsible for the creation of the universe so as we are responsible for our world. This narrates the terms such as the image of God as this provides the sense as we have created and maintaining our own world. I think somewhat this is necessary and necessary as well. However its duty of the human kind so that they can make it worth living, it believed that the God has created the world as per his own likeliness as now we have to manage and made the world as per his views. As humans are given special privileged over the other creature like the ability to understand and express the things as well as the quality of Creativeness which is not given to any other creature so we are responsible for the perfect management of the world which is made by the God and managed by the humans so that It would remain same as God wanted. Dominion over the earth by the human being is described as the influence of the image or the likeness of the God ( Keil, 1996). As stated by the William M baker the presence of the Likeliness of the God in the Human which makes them able to exercise the dominion over the world is itself not the image but somewhat closer to the God (Baker, 1991). Conclusion As a human being, we may not be able to understand the meaning of these phrases but it's in deep in our perception. After extensive research many theologians and the researchers as well Christian orthodox believes that we are still in the image of the God. With many different views regarding these concepts, most of the Christian Orthodox and theologies believe that we have been made in the Image of God and thats why we are capable of determining our own destiny. We have the ability to increase our knowledge and the wisdom so that we can manage the world which was created by the God as per his likeliness. This is a highly debatable topic and many scholars have expressed their views regarding this, many have described different sources which are responsible for it. These attitudes over-shadowed the good relationship Sam and Hally had built through most of Hallys childhood. Apartheid was a system that deliberately set out to humiliate black people, even to the point of relegating them to separate benches, entails the danger of habitual indifference to the everyday detail that shape black and white relationship and finally, perverts them. (Durbach 69). South Africa passed laws and acts making the black peoples lives degrading and ensured the white superiority. Four laws were passed in 1950 which included the Population Registration Act, Group Areas Act, the Amendment to the Immorality Act, and the suppression of the Communism Act. These laws did several things including classified people by color, governed areas for living according to race and controlled ownership of property, prohibited sexual contact across racial lines, and removed due process of laws for blacks. Tituba and The Salem Witch Trials of 1692 Tituba was among the first three people accused of being a witch during the Salem witch trials of 1692. She confessed to witchcraft and accused others. Tituba, also known as Tituba Indian, was a  household slave and servant whose birth and death dates are unknown. Tituba Biography Little is known of Titubas background or even origin. Samuel Parris, later to play a central role in the Salem witch trials of 1692 as the village minister, brought three enslaved persons with him when he came to Massachusetts from New Spain Barbados in the Caribbean. We can guess from the circumstances that Parris obtained ownership of Tituba in Barbados, probably when she was twelve or a few years older. We do not know if he obtained such ownership in settlement of a debt, though that story has been accepted by some. Parris was, at the time he was in New Spain, not yet married and not yet a minister. When Samuel Parris moved to Boston from New Spain, he brought Tituba,  John Indian and a young boy with him as household slaves. In Boston, he married and later became a minister. Tituba served as a housekeeper. In Salem Village Rev. Samuel Parris moved to Salem Village in 1688, a candidate for the position of Salem Village minister. In about 1689, Tituba and John Indian seem to have married. In 1689 Parris was formally called as the minister, given a full deed to the parsonage, and the Salem Village church charter was signed. Tituba would not likely have been directly involved in the growing church conflict involving Rev. Parris. But since the controversy included withholding salary and payment in firewood, and Parris complained about the effect on his family, Tituba probably would also have felt the shortage of firewood and food in the house. She would also have likely been aware of the unrest in the community when raids were launched in New England, starting up again in 1689 (and called King Williams War), with New France using both French soldiers and local Indians to fight against the English colonists. Whether she was aware of the political conflicts around Massachusetts status as a colony is not known. Whether she was aware of Rev. Parris sermons in late 1691 warning of Satans influence in town is also not known, but it seems likely that his fears were known in his household. Afflictions and Accusations Begin In early 1692, three girls with connections to the Parris household began to exhibit strange behavior. One was Elizabeth (Betty) Parris, the nine-year-old daughter of Rev. Parris and his wife. Another was Abigail Williams, age 12, called kinfolk or a niece of Rev. Parris. She may have served as a household servant and a companion to Betty. The third girl was Ann Putnam Jr., who was the daughter of a key supporter of Rev. Parris in the Salem Village church conflict. There is no source before the latter half of the 19th century, including transcripts of testimony in the examinations and trials, that supports the idea that Tituba and the girls who were accusers practiced any magic together. To find out what was causing the afflictions, a local doctor (presumably William Griggs) and a neighboring minister, Rev. John Hale, were called in by Parris. Tituba later testified that she saw visions of the devil and witches swarming. The doctor diagnosed the cause of the afflictions as Evil Hand. A neighbor of the Parris family, Mary Sibley, advised John Indian and possibly Tituba to make a witchs cake to identify the cause of the initial afflictions of Betty Parris and Abigail Williams. The next day, Betty and Abigail named Tituba as a cause of their behavior. Tituba was accused by the young girls of appearing to them (as a spirit), which amounted to an accusation of witchcraft. Tituba was questioned about her role. Rev. Parris beat Tituba to try to get a confession from her. Tituba Arrested and Examined On February 29, 1692, an arrest warrant was issued for Tituba in Salem Town. Arrest warrants were also issued for Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. All three of the accused were examined the next day at Nathaniel Ingersolls tavern in Salem Village by local magistrates Jonathan Corwin and John Hathorne. In that examination, Tituba confessed, naming both Sarah Osborne and Sarah Good as witches and describing their spectral movements, including meeting with the devil. Sarah Good claimed her innocence but implicated Tituba and Osborne. Tituba was questioned for two more days. Titubas confession, by the rules of the court, kept her from being tried later with others, including those who were eventually found guilty and executed. Tituba apologized for her part, saying she loved Betty and meant her no harm. She included in her confession complicated tales of witchcraft all compatible with English folk beliefs, not voodoo as some have alleged. Tituba herself went into a fit, claiming to be afflicted. After the magistrates finished their examination of Tituba, she was sent to jail. While she was imprisoned, two others accused her of being one of two or three women whose specters theyd seen flying. John Indian, through the trials, also had a number of fits when present for the examination of accused witches. Some have speculated that this was a way of deflecting further suspicion of himself or his wife. Tituba herself is hardly mentioned in the records after her initial arrest, examination, and confession. The Rev. Parris promised to pay the fee to allow Tituba to be released from prison. Under the rules of the colony, similar to rules in England, even someone found innocent had to pay for expenses incurred to imprison and feed them before they could be released. But Tituba recanted her confession, and Parris never paid the fine, presumably in retaliation for her recantation. After the Trials The next spring, the trials ended and various imprisoned individuals were released once their fines were paid. Someone paid seven pounds for Titubas release. Presumably, whoever paid the fine had purchased Tituba from Parris. The same person may have purchased John Indian; they both disappear from all known records after Titubas release. A few histories mention a daughter, Violet, who remained with the Parris family. Tituba in Fiction Arthur Miller includes Tituba in his 1952 play, The Crucible, which uses the Salem witch trials as a metaphor or analogy to 20th century McCarthyism, the pursuit, and blacklisting of accused Communists. According to Jan (2006), these are important issues of consideration when an organisation wants to embark on NPD. I view these findings as reliable and accurate. They are based on facts collected first hand and analysed using reliable software. The second phase was to analyse the minutes of Post-Project Reviews. The 19 minutes of PPRs were coded with extreme care being taken. Detailed understanding was obtained from the repertory grid interviews, and hence the same coding scheme was used for the PPRs minutes. A total of 56 lessons were documented. Importance of time Essay Do to the fact that I could not maintain punctuality in a classroom environment I shall be writing an essay of the importance of punctuality in the United States Military. Now of course it seems like this would be easy to understand however I had managed to forget it and this shall explain it in this essay. Before you can understand how being punctual is important you must understand what being punctual means. Punctuality is the characteristic of being able to complete a required task or fulfill a moral duty before or at a specific time. There is often an understanding that a small amount of lateness is acceptable.. However in some cultures, such as Japanese society, or in the military there basically is no allowance. Some cultures have an unspoken understanding that actual deadlines are different from stated deadlines; for example, it may be understood in a particular culture that people will turn up an hour later than advertised. In this case, since everyone understands that a 9 A.M. meeting will actually start around 10am, no-one is inconvenienced when everyone turns up at 10am. In cultures which value punctuality, being late is tantamount to showing disrespect for anothers time and may be considered insulting. In such cases, punctuality may be enforced by social penalties, for example by excluding low-status latecomers from meetings entirely. Being at the right place at the right time for any member of the Army is extremely essential to the defense of the entire United States of America. Its because of this that being on time is remarkably important. Dependability, accountability, consistency and discipline are all crucially related to being on time. Furthermore, promptness also shows that the individual Soldier aims high and has their priorities straight. However, being where one needs to be at the appointed time will always be one of the most important aspects of being a Soldier. This is why failure to be on time not only severely hinders mission capability and readiness, but also can without a doubt cost unnecessary loss of life. It is important to realize that it is necessary for those in the Armed Forces are held to a higher standard. Being punctual in the military is important for many reasons, some of which I shall describe, right now. One of the few reasons for punctuality in the military would be if someone is late for a patrol or convoy that patrol or convoy might have to leave without that person, or maybe wait for them or can’t leave without them and be late to a rally point in which it is possible that it would cost some one  there life for you being late being late to a convoy and could lead to dire consequences. Not necessarily to you but to your battle buddies you let down by not showing up. While they are on patrol, or convoying to another area, something could happen that could either need your expertise and training or they could just need another soldier to keep watch of their area and without you it would take more manpower from less people to do the job that you were supposed to do. Or maybe the patrol you were supposed to be on could be ambushed and your weapon, your eyes and your training could be what makes the difference between your patrol losing soldiers or not. It is possible that if you had been there your patrol could have seen the ambush with the extra set of eyes watching, or taken out the enemy with the extra soldier carrying a weapon he/she was trained to use. Now being late could be what makes you lose battle buddies that could have survived if you were there to help them in that situation. Even more possible is that your battle buddies are on a convoy and it could have been your eyes that notice the strange object in the road or the slight discoloration, or maybe the disheveled earth of the road ahead of you that could have prevented your convoy from running into an IED. Or in another situation one might be on their way to meet someone from another country and showing up late would be looked at as a dishonorable and that you didn’t care about them or what they were trying to do. Also being late could also hinder your battle buddies at work. You being late makes your battle buddy who you are supposed to relieve stay later than he/she is supposed to, meaning that said person loses sleep time. Another reason might be because if you were going to relieve someone from duty on a guard duty it will make whoever your relieving have to stay at work. Therefor making them stay longer which then makes them tired and sluggish. And because they are because they are tired and sluggish, it increases the high chance that whatever work that person does would be under par and not up to standards because of lack of sleep. Which on a guard post they might fall asleep and someone might slip in or pass along some classified information to the enemy without any difficulty. Although the United States is not the only society that places a high regard on being on time, Americans in particular it would seem have been criticized in the past for being a highly time-oriented people, and some other cultures may not place the same level of importance on being punctual as exists in the United States today. This sense of being tied to a clock may strike some observers from other cultures as being downright psychotic, but the fact remains that the importance of being on time is an enormously important part of the American value system and it would be reasonable to suggest that this will not change. In addition, people who fail to be on time also demonstrate whether intentionally or not what may be considered as a callous disregard for other people and their time. In the United States, then, the importance of punctuality is well established and those who are even a few minutes late for say, a job interview, run the very real risk of losing out to lesser qualified candidates simply because they were unable to find a place to park in time. Similarly, people who are consistently late will be viewed as unreliable by most employers and also run the risk of losing whatever employment they have managed to secure in the first place. Being on time is one thing, but being early is completely different. When you’re assigned to be at an appointed place at an appointed time then there is no room for tardiness. Not only is it disrespectful to your co-workers in regards to making them stay later and putting them â€Å"under the bus† but also it is an integrity check and denotes your lack of responsibility. When you have a trend of being late none of your co-workers will feel as if they cant rely on you.

It does involve obtaining permissions and licenses from concerned authorities at various stages.It s tarts with the setting up of a trust or a society, with a Governing board of five or six members, with a president, chairperson, and a secretary duly identified, as specified under the law. This article will focus primarily on identifying the various steps involved in Opening a school, providing facility for the study for students. SECOND STEP: Once the governing entity, whether a company, trust, or society, comes into existence, it will have to Look for land. There are two possibilities—one, if the society or trust has a land of its own, or, second, When the governing entity decides to buy a land for the proposed school.Buying land from the Government requires permission in the form of a no-objection certificate from the Department of Education of the concerned state. The no-objection certificate, called Essentiality Certificate (EC), Certifies the requirement of a school and college in a particular area. The logic behind the practice is to make Sure No two schools and colle ge compete with each other and one becomes redundant. The EC comes with a Rider that construction must commence within three years, failing which the society will have to reapply for the same.One can apply to the concerned municipal corporation for land for the school and college with the EC. Land is supposed to be allotted to the governing entity at subsidized rates is usually allotted through auction. LAW APPLICABLE Originally, education was a state subject under the Constitution. In 1976, by a constitutional Amendment, education came in the concurrent list, the joint responsibility of the central and state governments. â€Å"It is almost impossible for a new entrant to get land. Land is normally granted to established players with a chain of schools and colleges.Even if a member on the board of a governing entity has land that the entity wants to use for setting up a school and colleges, a no-objection from the Department of Education stating the requirement of a school and coll eges in that area is required. The major education boards of the country, namely, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Council for the Indian School Certificate examinations (CISCE), UGC and state government boards, have clearly laid down norms for land requirements for schools and colleges. This, in most cases, is 2 acres, except for hilly regions and metropolitan cities, where the requirement is less.Construction can take place only on a part of the land, and a playground has to be created in the rest. While conceiving the idea of a school and college, one has to assess the potentials of a location, kind of competition possible, and the target group—the lower middle class, upper middle class or the rich class—the school and colleges will cater to. From the time of forming a governing entity to a school and colleges actually starting up, one normally requires about a year, though taking more than two years is also not unheard of.Normally the infrastruc ture required to start up can be constructed within a period of six to seven months. Once the construction is over, school and college authorities need to apply for recognition. Up to Class 5 recognition from municipality is all that is required. For Classes 6 to 8 recognition comes from the Department of Education. Recognition for anything above this also comes from the Education Department, but after a minimum gap of two years. School authorities are free to seek affiliation to CBSE or CISCE or ugc. In that case, the school will have to follow the guidelines of the board it is seeking affiliation to.The school will need to follow the syllabus, books prescribed by the affiliating board, and pay specified salaries to the teachers. If it is not a government school, affiliation for schools normally comes in stages. Initially, for Classes 1 to 6 a temporary affiliation is given and guidelines are laid down for schools by the concerned education board. Once things are in place according to the guidelines, an inspection is conducted. If things are to the satisfaction of the board authorities, permanent affiliation is bestowed on the school. ays inspections are not so rigorous after permanent affiliation is granted, but a school has to be run according to the rules of the board. LICENSES AND DOCUMENTS Setting up a school involves a lot of legal processes from the very beginning. While forming a society, trust, or company, one has to have a Memorandum of Association, a document needed almost at every stage later. Like for any other business, a detailed project report for the school is also needed. In addition, details of land and building, auditor’s statement, bank statements of the governing entity and their members and auditor’s statements are needed at some point or the other.Once the school and college building is ready for initial use, a certificate of recognition has to come from the state government, issued by the municipality for the junior clas ses, and by the Department of Education for middle school. If high school is to be added subsequently, certificate of up gradation is required which is again issued by the Education Department. Affiliation from either the CBSE or CISCE or UGC is also done through a set process. Things do not stop here, as schools and college need Certificates for hygiene, water, and completion of the building from the municipality.

The Mermaid Symbolism Essay Example The Mermaid Symbolism Paper The Mermaid Symbolism Paper In folklore, Mermaids have female heads and torsos, but are fish-like from the waist down. They are generally regarded as mythical and beautiful creatures with the power over the seas and hold the many mysteries of the deep. Tales of half-human, half-fish creatures are universal, with each country having their own versions and stories. Every culture and county has its own version of the mermaid and some variances exist about the nature of mermaids. However, what is common among them is that these creatures are generally regarded as enchanting, beautiful, and immortal, even as they are mysterious and elusive. (Waugh 76) On the novel `One Tribe, Evelina Galang starts the story with the sudden death of Isabel Manalo’s unborn child. This tragic death turn stirred up much rumors, gossip and speculation in a small Midwestern suburb where Isabel. The nasty rumors continued unabated, which led Isabel to move to Virginia Beach to concentrate on teaching the Filipino Americans youths there about Filipino myth and history. In the book One Tribe, the image of the mermaid has been intimately associated with the main character as she endeavors to lead a life of self-determination and actualization, even as she tries to break free from the roles that society imposes upon her. Isa thought that she would finally find acceptance in Virginia Beach as a teacher of history and mythology to the Filipino-American community. However, Isa soon finds out that, just like the Midwestern suburb she left behind, she is also perceived as an unwanted stranger in Virginia Beach; tolerated yes, but not totally accepted. Isa finds herself in a right smack in the middle of an unruly community where gang violence and drive-by shootings are common place. Apart from the chaos around her, Isabel is also subject to varying levels of hostility and suspicion from the different groups in her community who continue to harbor some misgivings about her, primarily because of largely mysterious circumstances of her past. At the start of her teaching job, Isa has her first encounter with the mermaid as the symbol of Las Dalagas, a gang of school-age girls who are into hip-hop and slang language. Isabel then uses the Mermaid to symbolize the girls’ freedom, their sexuality and the girls’ vulnerability to the destructive nature of the environment that shapes them. In the case of the girls of Las Dalagas, the mermaid symbolizes their independence and the ability to use their sexuality, beauty and talent in ways that are destructive to the people around them and to themselves as well. On the surface the girls of the Las Dalagas look exactly like any other girl, but on closer look, one will realize the depths of their capacity for misfit and menace, or their general disregard for rules. Just like mermaids, these girls are free to roam the boundless sea. Isabel’s fixations with the mermaid as well as with the girls of Las Dalagas are manifestations of her own longing for freedom. One can vey well see that she years for the qualities that both the mermaid and the Las Dalagas have. One can find such longing for freedom in the following passages of the book One Tribe: She envied that they had friends who shared so much with them. In Virginia, children weren’t islands. They were oceans, bodies of water so large and so full, so tumultuous, that no one, not even the administration could ignore them. (24) The fact that Isabel compares children with water means that she acknowledges that these young people are unlimited and full of possibilities, limited only by their daring to explore and their willingness to go as far as their dreams would take them. Isabel wants to go back to that time, when like a mermaid, she can travel and go where she wants to go and do what she wants to do, without regard for social norms and responsibilities. The freedom as exercised by the girls refers to their disregard for anything that tries to limit or pigeonhole them. However, on the flip side, Isabel recognizes the destructive path that the girls are taking. Isabel realizes that it is a waste to use youth and beauty in ways that are harmful to the self and to others, like the mermaids who use their beauty and voice to lure sailors to the depths where they drown and die. That mermaids chose to use their physical attributes in damaging ways is nothing short of a tragedy. More than freedom, the mermaids are also representative of the girls’ sexuality as well as the destructive nature with which they use their sexuality. Destructive nature is seen in the very participation of these girls in the gang. They use their skills, beauty and personality to break the law. Such dangerous sexuality can be seen in the following lines: This is the craziest thing she’s ever seen her sister do, but there she is, Miss Teenage Sampaguita. A white gown cascades down her body and billows at her feet. She has curled her black hair into tiny ringlets and gathered them up and stuffed them like posies on her ridiculous head. Bel squints into the lens. She focuses on her sister’s sash, a garish white satin banner with harlot-red lettering†¦. The reason why it is important to understand the symbolism of mermaids in the book â€Å"One Tribe†, is because Isabel Manalo attempts to discover her own unique self through the troubled teens while at the same time endorse some ideas of feminism as seen by the ability to troubled girls to effectively participate in a gang. The symbol of the mermaid is key to appreciating Galang’s book One Tribe. Isabel, the main character attempts to discover herself by looking at the lives of these troubled girls and how their struggles parallel her own. By trying coming to understand the reasons behind their destructive behavior, Isabel slowly comes to a place of empathy, forgiveness, and acceptance of her own past. Like mermaids who are half-creatures, not fully human and not fully fish, Isabel feels like a stranger in her own skin. She longs to find her true purpose in life. Mermaids are known to yearn for land and live as humans do. Similarly, Isabel straddles two worlds, and she does not fully belong in the two. While Filipina by ancestry, the fact that Isabel lives and works in the United States makes her American. On the other hand, the color of her skin and her Asian features make her Filipino. This situation makes it difficult for Isabel to find real acceptance in any of the two societies with which she has ties to. She is part of both, but does not fully belong to either of them. The author explores these various attributes of the mermaid and relates this to various aspects of the main character’s life. In some aspects, the mermaid is a destructive force in so far as the Las Dalagas are concerned. Their destructive nature is a function of the labels and stereotypes that is imposed upon them. In the end it might be said that mermaids and the Las Dalagas are products of their environment. They are only acting according to how society expects them to act. On the other hand, mermaids symbolize Isabel’s search for her rightful place, where she will be accepted for her unique contributions as a human being without any regard for her history. One Tribe is one mermaid’s tale to find her place in the vast sea of life. This can be seen at the beginning of the book where Isabel taught the story of creation to her class: The sea rose high and higher, crawling onto its knees and finally standing on its feet, spewing water up into the sky’s scowling, bitter face. The waves ripped the tissues of blue sky into tiny pieces. And then the sky threw paper rocks and cardboard boulders onto the floor. This surprised everyone, especially the sea, which calmed under the weight of the rocks. So the thrashing of water died, leaving the sky to herself. The rocks rooted themselves to the earth, settled their bodies among the seas and formed seven-thousand islands. And the bird rested her wings among the rocks, settled on a hill and found herself a home at last. (12) Isabel’s story is our story. It is a tale of a mermaid who longs to be in another place even as she longs to be accepted in the sea that she has come to know as home. Whatever our life stories and histories may be, we at some point in our lives feel lost and uncertain of where we are going and what we want to be. Like mermaids, we too have been involved in some form of self-destructive behavior. But unlike mermaids, we are not tied to a life of uncertainty. We have the power to live a meaningful and purposeful life. Indeed, after the turbulence and the maelstrom of living, there is a promise of calm seas to those who are willing to take on the many storms of life, and that is what Isabel and the mermaid is trying to tell us. What Is Content Marketing No one cares about advertising anymore. Content marketing is king. We skip ads using our DVR. We buy Netflix on demand. We scroll past the ever-increasing number of ads in our Facebook feed.  We dont like ads, and thats discouraging for those who are trying to market their product. But, there is hope. We share blog posts and recommend them to our friends. We comment and discuss the killer content that we love. Getting the word out about our brand, business, product, or organization isnt impossible, but the methods have surely changed.  Content marketing is taking over the world. What is content marketing? What is Content Marketing? Advertising is built on   interruptions–taking up 30 seconds of your time during the Super Bowl, or sneaking its way into your social media feeds. No matter when it happens, you probably didnt ask for it. This is what makes it annoying. Content marketing is different. Content marketing is permission-based.   Its marketing that we freely invite into our lives, and sometimes even share with our friends. Content marketing is any marketing format that involves the creation and sharing of media and publishing content in order to acquire customers. -Wikipedia Content marketing is built on the idea that the best way to build trust with our potential customers is to give them something they want. Online, this often translates to  helpful content that doesnt interrupt whatever the visitor is doing, but rather invites them to learn, enjoy, and connect. Good content marketing  brings the user to us, rather than forcing ourself in front of the user.  This builds trust and loyalty with potential customers.   The Content Marketing Institute says it more formally: Content marketing is a marketing technique of creating and distributing relevant and valuable content to attract, acquire, and engage a clearly defined and understood target audience–with the objective of driving profitable customer action. While it employs a less in your face approach, content marketing is still about results. In fact, it is often more result-driven than its traditional counterpart. Inbound Marketing More recently, the term inbound marketing (also Seth Godins term, permission marketing) has taken hold as a way to describe the type of marketing that allows customers to come to the brand on their own rather than the brand reaching out to the customer via advertising. This idea is built upon the assumption that if you publish helpful content, the customer will look for the business that is offering the best advice. The best way to understand this is to think about a Google search. If a customer does a search online for advice on how to grow their garden, what will they find? Chances are, they will receive a list of blog posts and articles offering tips and tricks for gardeners. Because Google prioritizes local results, a local nursery that is offering this type of advice on their blog will rank highly in the search results. For the local nursery, this is an inbound marketing technique–getting the customer to reach out to you first. It is pretty easy to see that this entire transaction was only made possible because of helpful content that exists because of content marketing. What Is Content Marketing (Not)? Sometimes it is easier to think in terms of what something is not rather than what is it. Content marketing is many things, but there are definitely a few things that it is not. It Is Not About You  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ This one flies directly in the face of most advertising theories. Ads are always about the company paying for them. With content marketing, we need to take the opposite approach. The content needs to be about our audience. It Is Not About Your Product  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ Its not about our company, but surely its about the our product? Nope, its not about that either. Content marketing is 100% about helping your customer succeed (using your content). Again, not your product. It Is Not About Instant Sales – Content marketing is a long-term strategy for building customer trust and loyalty to a brand or an idea. It isnt as concerned with an immediate sale. It knows that sales are earned by building customer trust. After all, you cant trick anyone into buying anything. It Is Not About Creativity – Creativity is king for the advertising world, but not content marketing. Content has a bigger mission.
